Is Batman an aged worker?
Ridiculous question, I know.
Batman (aka Ben Affleck) manifests all his action-hero-awesomeness at 45 years of age.
In contrast, in Australia, an ‘aged worker’ is someone aged 45 and over.
In contrast, in Australia, an ‘aged worker’ is someone aged over 45. According to The Conversation, age discrimination is a reality for almost a third of people working or looking for work as young as 45. Those aged over 45 are much more likely to be let go by their employers than younger age groups according to the AFR.
But 45 really feels so… YOUNG. We go from being a graduate who isn’t given much challenging work to being the ‘hot young talent’ to then an ‘aged worker’.
It all happens so fast.
For women, child rearing years often correspond with the ‘hot young talent’ years, making prime earning time even shorter.
What is to be done about this? A youthful haircut?
Sometimes you need to create your own opportunity. The movie, The Battle of the Sexes, tells the story of female tennis players in the early 1970s having their pay cut in order to fund a pay increase for the male players and the promoters. In protest, putting their careers on the line, nine female players including Billie Jean King stage a boycott and set up a rival tour with the assistance of publisher Gladys Heldman. With their own tour and through securing their own sponsorship, they were able to achieve much higher prize money.
One of the reasons I started IncomeConnection is because the traditional job market doesn’t work for many people. So I have created a market place of over 110 diverse ways for you to earn an income. Some of them are passive, others build connections within your community and some are a whole lot of fun.
Thank you for reading. In signing off, here is a here is a photo of me, aged almost 45 at Angel’s Landing, Zion National Park, Utah, one of the 10 most dangerous hiking trails in the world. And one of the most spectacular. In January 2018 I am ticking another hike off that list.
Like Batman, we don't step back from our life of adventure.
